Tomato Seed Germination Description
Tomato seed germination is the process by which a tomato seed develops into a seedling. This process typically takes 5 to 10 days under optimal conditions. Here's a step-by-step description:
1. Imbibition (Water Uptake) Timeline: Day 0–1
The dry seed absorbs water, causing it to swell and soften.
The seed coat becomes more permeable, activating internal metabolic processes.
2. Activation of Metabolism Timeline: Day 1–2
Enzymes are activated that begin converting stored starches into sugars.
Cellular respiration increases to provide energy for growth.
3. Radicle Emergence Timeline: Day 3–5
The radicle (embryonic root) is the first structure to break through the seed coat.
It grows downward into the soil to anchor the seedling and begin water/nutrient absorption.
4. Shoot Emergence Timeline: Day 5–10
The hypocotyl (stem) elongates and pulls the cotyledons (seed leaves) above the soil surface.
This is called epigeal germination.
5. Seedling Establishment Timeline: After Day 7
The cotyledons open and begin photosynthesis.
Soon, the first true leaves appear, signaling that the plant is ready to grow independently.
Optimal Conditions for Germination: Temperature: 70–85°F (21–29°C)
